Although the black bellydancer does exist, our existence is rare. Yes, we can be found surrounded by other beautiful bellydancer, and you can sometimes discover us performing individual solo choreography. However rarely do you see Pan African bellydancers dancing collectively. Unsure of how to compose a remedy we have sought assistance from our most valuable and inspirational mentor Dunia (a professional bellydance instructor of 20 yrs & founder / coordinator of the annual tradition of Desert Dance bellydance festival); additional advisory support is welcome. Using support and our heritage as our backbone, we see our emergence as a local performing black troupe as a remedy. As members of both the Pan African and bellydance community we perceive a need to collectively represent the art form as black sisters.
As an admirer of diversity and various art forms we are requesting your assistance in seeking out black bellydancers to join our up and coming dance troupe.

***REGISTER NOW THRU MAY 4 at www.threshold2008.org***

Public Voices for Housing Choices: Threshold 2008 Online Dialogue is your chance to weigh in and discuss housing and quality of life issues in San Mateo County with your neighbors, coworkers, and housing experts. Our elected officials are listening.

Threshold 2008 (www.threshold2008.org) is a nonprofit community-driven effort to make the process of developing housing policies and solutions more inclusive.

Open to all who live or work in San Mateo County

Registration is open NOW thru May 4 at www.threshold2008.org (The online dialogue will occur from May 5 to May 16)

How much does it cost you to live or work in San Mateo County? Were you stuck in traffic on your way to work or home today? Most people do not have time to go to city council and planning commission meetings where housing policy decisions are made and we want your story to be heard.

We also want to know how you think a housing shortage affects your community. For instance, do you think the current housing market affects the decisions of teachers, nurses and vital service workers to serve San Mateo County? And what will housing in the county look like in 2025 when it’s projected that there will be 71,000 new households and 133,300 new jobs – who do you think will be able to live and work here? Do you think the county needs more housing? If so, what kinds of developments do you favor and where should we build new homes?

Your voice can make a difference for all of San Mateo County. Register to participate at www.threshold2008.org.

A Book Club for Spiritual Growth

Have you ever felt that being homosexual, bisexual, or transsexual is a good thing rather than an abomination?
Have you ever thought that you exist the way you are for a reason rather than as an abnormality?
Have you ever considered that being gay, bi, lesbian, or trans might be a gift rather than a burden?

Chances are you haven't because these ideas aren't modeled for us. What if you could explore these ideas for yourself in a safe and supportive environment?

This book club is a gateway to embracing yourself as a queer being. We do this by exploring the writings of those who've journeyed ahead of us. Our vision is that each of us in the group move toward a greater understanding and acceptance of ourselves as queer beings. We hold a sacred space where personal sharing and deep listening are practiced. The goal for each of us is to move closer to being able to say YES to the questions above.

This book club is just like every other book club in that we read books. We differ in the way that we work with the material. Each week we bring more than our thoughts, we bring our experience of how the books are affecting us, changing us, and challenging us. We are asked to go deeper into the material. What made our hearts joyful and what made our hearts ache?

We will meet twice a month on the first and third Monday evenings. We begin on March 3rd and we will meet at the First Unitarian Church of San Jose.

Space is limited in this small group so please contact me to reserve your space or if you have questions.

Mine would be:

Aqui in Willow Glen for cheap, very tasty and original cal-mex plates (Cuban Pork burrito w/Plantains)

E&O Trading Company in d/t San Jose for original dishes, and traditional stuff with original serving methods.

MoBo Sushi in Santa Cruz, for the same reason. Plus the fact that they survived off and on for so many years.

I live in Osaka now, and a lot of people here ask me how much more expensive is it to live in Japan than the US. They're usually stunned to hear how much rent we were paying when we left San Jose two years ago. The funny thing is, we felt like we had it way cheap.

We were paying $1100/mo. for a 2BR/1BA apartment, space for two cars, and a pool that was available 3 months of the year. We were in a charming cul-de-sac near the Pruneyard in San Jose. No noise, or traffic problems, and pretty safe area.

We had friends who, as a couple were paying $1200/mo. for a master bedroom with it's own bathroom in a shared-house with 3 more bedrooms. I can't imagine it now, but that's what it was, just before the boom went bust.

Now, with the bubble having long-burst, and houses actually staying on the market for more than 2 days, what is the rent situation like in the valley now?
